Vestry Covenant

Chapel of All Saints
Vestry Covenant

Recognizing Holy Scripture as the authority which should govern our behavior toward and relationships with one another and with the larger congregation, and recalling St. Paul’s directive to St. Timothy concerning his need, as a church leader, to be “an example to the believers, in speech, love, faith and purity (I Tim 4:12)”, we therefore agree:

To respect one another by:
1. Being sensitive to the different styles and personalities of individual Vestry members and seeking to validate, appreciate, acknowledge, respect and understand the unique and special gifts of each member;
2. Acting in such a way that as to build up and support one another, confronting issues without demeaning anyone;
3. Consciously seeking to abandon personal agendas and self – serving attitudes;
4. Refusing to entertain or participate in gossip or backbiting regarding any fellow Christian, especially fellow Vestry members, parishioners, clergy or church leaders, and encouraging those who have differences to speak with one another directly;
5. Maintaining a “servant attitude” by remembering, always, that the vestry’s role is one of serving Christ and His Church;
6. Recognizing that some discussions, including some which may take place within the context of a Vestry meeting, are of a confidential nature and by maintaining appropriate discretion;
7. Keeping all communication via e-mail at a strict “information – only” level.

To be an example to the congregation by:
1. Recalling that we are representatives of the greater whole of our Chapel and were elected to these positions by our peers;
2. Maintaining open lines of communication regarding any and all decisions affecting the congregation as a whole;
3. Being visible in the church as often as possible including attending regular and special services;
4. Attending all regular Vestry and Wardens meetings as well as those designated as “Special Meetings”.

We, the undersigned, realize that we are the governing body of this Chapel and have been placed in a position that allows us to actively participate in the decisions concerning our Chapel. We will strive to be open, honest, and respectful, recognizing that we each were given special talents by God, and will seek to use these talents wisely. We will consult this covenant and enter into prayer if we should ever stray from our promises to ourselves, our fellow parishioners or God. We pledge to uphold this covenant, with the help of God.
In most instances, this covenant may be applied to the entire parish by simply substituting the word, “church” or “parish” for the word “vestry”.
